With the arrival of the beautiful season we start talking about sun creams and SPF, and their importance for the protection from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays.
But the sun, in addition to being the cause of some irreparable damages, only if specific precautions are not taken, is really efficient for multiple aspects, influencing even the mood.
Let’s see what.
Sunlight and Mood
For some people it is a real therapy of happiness.
Among the hormones of our brain there are two which are particularly sensitive to the light and they are Serotonin and Melatonin.
Sunlight, by stimulating some special area in the retina of the eye, is responsible for the release of Serotonin, the hormone which regulates the mood.
If the exposure to the sun is low even the levels of Serotonin remain low.
That is, in some cases, it may cause a depressive disorder known as SAD Syndrome Affective Disorder.
When the sunlight gives way to the night, Melatonin comes forward in the brain. It is the hormone related to sleep and it regulates the hours of rest at night.
Sunlight, more strength to the bones.
It takes just 10 minutes of sunlight to increase the levels of Vitamin D, which is essential for preventing osteoporosis and arthritis.
Due to its characteristics, Vitamin D controls the amount of calcium which is absorbed by the intestine and regulates calcium levels in the bones and phosphorus in the blood.
Very few foods contain it and it is the body that produces it.
10 minutes of sun exposure every day on arms, hands and face are enough to increase the level of Vitamin D in the body.
It is still…
- Psoriasis, Eczema and Acne can also be treated by the exposure to the sun’s rays (According to the World Health Organization).
- Several research studies have identified a potential beneficial treatment in sunlight for Rheumatoid arthritis and Thyroiditis.
- Sunlight also has a positive influence on the blood pressure. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it can contrast infections by improving the immune system.
We therefore take advantage of the natural light to take walks outdoors and dive into a source of well-being, energy and good mood.
